Elena Voss in her studio with reference photos and a portrait in progress

“Every portrait starts with the photos — but the real work is capturing what made them irreplaceable.”

— Elena

The Artist

Meet Elena Voss

I started The Final Sitting in 2023, a few months after losing my border collie, Maren. She’d been with me for fourteen years — through art school, two cross-country moves, and every late night in the studio.

When she passed, I wanted something more than a photo on my phone. I wanted a portrait that felt the way she felt — warm, steady, always a little amused. So I painted one. Then a friend asked me to paint hers. Then another.

Now I spend my days working from other people’s photos, trying to find the thing that made their companion theirs. The tilt of an ear. The way they sat slightly crooked. The look they gave you when they knew it was dinnertime.

I personally compose and refine every portrait that leaves this studio. It’s the kind of work I wish someone had done for me.
